Having the right gear is important. I’m a big believer in getting good gear from the start. Triathlon gear can be very pricey, but you can find good gear for a reasonable price. Seven years ago I bought my first triathlon bicycle, a P3 Cervelo aluminum bicycle. When I rode out of the store I had spent $2958 for the bicycle, a helmet and some Speed Play pedals. I still race on this bicycle today. I’m sure if I had bought a cheaper bicycle I would not be riding it today.
I made this mistake with wetsuits. My first was an on-line suit that was not the right fit. Then I went with one from my local tri store that was on sale. Finally I went to a wet-suit demo and found a beautiful Blue Seventy wet suit. I could have save $400 if I had just gotten a better wet suit to begin with.
It’s better to spend a little more up front and be happy with what you have. Instead of spending less for gear that’s not really what you want. At every race you might end up having gear envy.
